I just gave Liu Kang the beating of his life… *now pumping my fist in the air*. I’m the king of Mortal Kombat 3. Nobody can touch this. I have just succeeded in beating all my friends and even the computer on the Master Level. My friends all left me to play with the Computer after dem chop like four rounds of beating. They opted to while away their time with other games in the Game House. PlayStation 2 was a luxury back then, but daaammmnn! Nintendo was the boss! I loved playing Mortal Kombat, I could eat, sleep and dream MK, as winning game after game, gave me the superb feeling like I was ruling the universe.
Emi ati awon goons mi… Myself, Kunle Agbaje, Ochuko Okposio, Shoga Shonubi, Seyi Bodunde, Felix Oteku and Timothy Abanigbe (it’s crazy how you can still remember everybody’s names after almost 20yrs). This was way back when we were in JSS3 or what is called Basic 9 now. We had all sneaked out of school around 11am, “scaling” the fence just behind the Principal’s office to make our escape. To save our money, we trekked all the way to the Game House which was about 1km away. This was solely done so we could spend more on gaming time.
On our way, we started planning our strategies for playing MK3, who would play first and who would come next and what characters we would use? Everyone knew I loved using Cyrax, so they simply opted for other Characters; Smoke, Kabal, Sektor, Jax, Sindel, Kitana, Liu Kang, Stryker and the rest. There was a law in the game house then called “Winner Stays”. I hope the game lovers back then can relate. This law simply states that “once you make your payment to play a game, you can play for as long as you wish, as long as you keep winning.” Your one-time payment can take you for days, if you don’t lose. Some of us had the mastery of carrying over our “Winner Stays” title for up to 3 or 4 days, before the law was eventually scrapped.
Anyway, today was one of the good days and I was enjoying my “Winner Stays” status on Mortal Kombat 3. Kunle Agbaje and Timothy Abanigbe were playing Street Fighter, Shoga Shonubi and Seyi Bodunde were playing Soccer while Felix Oteku and Ochuko Okposio settled for Contra.
Everything seemed to be going on smoothly till we heard a familiar voice in the Game House…
“Ehn, ehnnnn, this is where you boys come to waste your time during school hours abi? Is this what your parents are paying school fees for? Are you not all supposed to be in school?”
By now, we didn’t even have to look back to know that it was Mr. Friday, our Mathematics teacher. At this point, we wished we had some form of wizardry that could just make us vanish from sight. We were all frozen with pads in our hands. After a few seconds, reality dawned on us as we clearly now understood the gravity of our atrocity. We all jumped up and headed for the door, but Mr. Friday immediately blocked the entrance wielding a big “pankere” at us. This game house owners are idiots, why didn’t they think of such situations and create an emergency exit? We were doomed.
“I will teach you boys a lesson. I will make you scapegoats”. He roared and started flogging whoever his cane could touch. We all just kept jumping here and there. The idea was to make sure the cane doesn’t land on you. But Mr. Friday was like Goro with six hands, we all still managed to get a few hits. This wasn’t games anymore, this was live BRUTALITY!
After several minutes, he relaxed and said… “We are all going to the Principals office. You are all going to get expelled”.
Omo, come and see begging! “We are sorry sir! Please forgive us sir! It was the devil sir!” We begged and begged all the way back to the school premises. Luckily for us, by the time we got back to the school, it was already past 1pm and the day was over. Most students and teachers had started sauntering home. It was a Friday and the Principal had already left for a function and wouldn’t be coming back till the following week. Mr. Friday looked at us with mean eyes… “I’ll see you all Monday”.
Monday never came as Mr. Friday was transferred to another school! Hahahahaha!
#TGIF People. Have a great weekend!
